Spotlight on Alejandra Kearl
Alejandra Kearl started her own line of fashionable and modern girls' clothing in 2004 in Los Angeles.
Alejandra Kearl Designs caters to girls 6 months to 6 years old, and each piece in her clothing line is handmade and certified sweatshop free.
Alejandra's design concepts incorporate simple yet sophisticated silhouettes and hand-embroidered details to give her garments a timeless and decidedly feminine feel.
Alejandra Kearl Designs also takes pride in giving back to the community through donation programs, where each purchase of a blanket is matched by a donated blanket to an infant in need in Los Angeles.
Although she is a stay-at-home mom to two young boys, her clothing line truly embodies and reflects a young girl's spirit.
What inspired your spring and summer collections this year?
My spring/summer line was inspired by nature and warm weather. I live in LA and there are lots of places to get inspiration: downtown is a collage of all types of fashions and cultures - just walking around and people watching inspires me. I also love going into my backyard and looking out into the mountains, and that is where I find myself sketching most of the time.
With two sons, how did you get started designing for girls?
I started my business by doing boys' and girls' clothes. In time, I found myself designing mostly girls' clothes. I think that the reason is mainly the endless possibilities and freedom of creation when it comes to girls' clothes. I still create boys' items for a local boutique, but most of my creations are for girls.
What are your favorite colors and materials to work with?
I prefer natural fibers; cotton is my favorite material, silk being a close second. I love how soft, versatile and beautiful cotton is. I like all colors, as change is always good from season to season. But, I have to say shades of pink and natural (ivory) are always in my collections in some way.
What do you have in store for fall and winter collections?
My fall/winter collection is a bright, fun and whimsical collection. I wanted to make sure that during these hard times I could bring a little smile to those who saw my designs. As a mother of 2 boys, I spend a lot of time at the LA Zoo, and you will see that come through my designs this fall.
Who are your favorite children's clothing designers?
I really enjoy album di famiglia's baby clothes - they have a very vintage look and feel. I also like Maan - the details and original colors are classic.
When it comes to boys, mine are always wearing Jackapotamus shirts, a Santa Monica-based designer and friend of mine.
What is your favorite design and why?
My favorite design is the elephant dress in fuchsia from my Fall 2009 collection. It's just such a happy little dress; I took a very long time designing all the details and choosing the perfect color combination, I can't wait to show you!
What are you most proud of?
I'm the most proud of and at the same time thankful for being a stay-at-home mom to my boys, while I'm also able to work from home and follow my passion for design.
Why is buying handmade important to you?
I know that in my efforts to succeed in my business many people have supported me and my small business. I feel the need to do the same for other artists. There are so many wonderful creations out there just waiting to be discovered. I've found so many wonderful presents while searching Etsy, from toys to jewelry. The originality, quality and price on handmade items can't compare with mass produced items.

I really love these dresses! I have an 8-month old girl and one of the many joys she brings me is the chance to dress her in a new frock every day of the week. I also think it's great to support businesses by stay-at-home moms (its just as difficult as those of us who work outside the home) - let's face it, Mom's rule :)
